Although we completed this stunning Ozarks roof last year, we recently had the opportunity to revisit and take some photos of the completed estate. Vermont slate tiles were used for the roof of the living area, garage and pool house. We also installed custom-fabricated copper flashings on this 23,000-square-foot home.
It's always gratifying to restore the luster of a historic home. We recently finished a total slate roof replacement on a vintage house in Lawrence. Although slate is highly durable, the waterproofing and wood beneath it corrodes over time and can ultimately lead to water damage. New Vermont slate, accompanied by copper flashing and copper nails, restored the organic beauty of the original roof and a separate garage building.
“Shake” historically refers to thick, textured wooden shingles. Before modern techniques were invented, shakes were split from a block of redwood or cedar. The splitting action created the fibrous texture known as shake. An alternative to wood is an equally appealing synthetic shake shingle. These are made with polymers or from recycled materials, with curb appeal that equals or rivals that of wood shake.
